What goes up...

must come down! Garrett spent 10 days off the ventilator and 2 1/2 days with a nasal cannula. He went from doing 80% of the work on the CPAP to 95% of the work on the nasal cannula, but he is still too small and got way too tired. On Saturday morning, they had to put Garrett back on the ventilator. He struggled his first day on the vent and his CO2 levels were elevated. He kept dropping his heart rate and his oxygen saturation was increasing & decreasing.

Since Saturday, he has gotten better. The pressure of the ventilator has been decreased and the amount of oxygen has also decreased. However, the labs from his blood work today came back with some levels that could possibly indicate an infection. They have also noticed some fluid on his lungs, so they have started him on preventative antibiotics and have sent some blood and some of the fluid to be cultured. If they grow anything, they will tweak the type of antibiotics to help fight whatever type of infection he has. If it doesn't grow anything, they will take him off the antibiotics.

However, with all of the steps it seems he has taken backwards...he is still tolerating his feeds and he has gained weight. Our little man now weighs in at 2lbs. and 12 oz!!!

Hang in there, I hate that you are having to ride the downhill part of the NICU rollercoaster, but just give him time, you will be on the trip back up in no time! We are saying a special prayer for Garrett that this is not an infection. Hang in there, hugs and prayers, The Edgemans
