Baby steps...but we did it!!!

Well...Heath and I did it! We were able to leave the hospital last night and were able to make it with dry eyes. Now, before you go and think we are really strong, we only went a couple of miles down the road to a hotel. With the weather being so bad we decided yesterday to book a hotel room just in case we were unable to make it home. Honestly, we probably could've made it home just fine, but our baby step was to sleep somewhere away from Garrett and we will make our way up to Allen very soon.

As we left last night the nurses were telling us that he was doing well, but that they were watching his heart rate. The tube down his trachea had been touching the "little V" where the it separates (yes...it has a name, but I cannot remember what it is!!!!!). When the tube touches the V it makes that babies heart rate drop. They moved the tube up so that hopefully it will keep this from happening again.

We are at the hotel right now and are going to stay till close to check out time (noon). That way the roads won't be as icy and we can make our way back to the hospital. We will hang out there most of the day and then take me home so that I can sleep in my own bed. There have been a lot of people reminding me that I still need to recuperate and regain my strength because we still have a long road ahead. I still cannot tell you how overwhelmed I have been by the outpouring of love and prayers our direction. God has blessed us with the best family, friends, and friends of family!!!!

Congrats on the arrival of Garrett. It will be tough, but you are a tough girl and you are going to do fine. We will continue to pray for your family and if you need anything just let us know. We love you.

Carla and Heath,
The demonstration of your faith has been an inspiration to me!! There seems to be a peace that surpasses understanding in everything you say and do. I am so thankful that you are doing well enough to sleep in your own bed tonight! You three will be in my prayers! Love, aunt glenda

I know it has been forever since we have seen each other, but April has kept me posted through Kim. You have such a beautiful baby boy, who is lucky to have such a fun-loving mom! Know that our entire family has you wrapped in prayers. I know we are miles away, but if there is anything we can do please let us know!
Lots of Love~

Carla, Heath and Garrett,

Ross, Jack and I are so excited about how well you all are doing. God is so good! Carla, I don't know another way to get a hold of you, so I will post this but feel free to hide it if you don't want others to read it. After I had Jack I really struggled with low blood sugars especially while I was pumping breast milk for him. I had to eat a banana during the pumping just so I wouldn't get really bad when I was finished. Also, I stayed on the low side of the blood sugar scale until Jack was about 3 months old. I was constantly scaling back on my insulin, but there was just a lot of stress and that usually causes me to bottom out. I know your stress level is about a million times bigger than mine was and even if you don't complain about it, your body knows there is something different going on and will react accordingly. I also struggled with remembering to take care of myself when necessary, especially if Jack needed or wanted something right then. Ross really helped by picking up on the signs that I needed to eat and encouraging me to do so, but I really had to make an effort to zone out of mommy mode and deal with the BG situation before it got out of control. Your monitor alarm will probably really come in handy on that front. We are so excited for you guys and will continue to pray for you daily. I will tell Ross to text Heath my cell number if you ever need to call or just have a question about stuff going on with your diabetes. Talk to you soon.

Heath, Carla and Garrett,
I pray that God will continue to give you the strength that can come only from Him. Please know that Kathy and I and a lot of people at Ash Creek Baptist in Azle Texas are praying for the three of you each day. I've been kept updated each day by Mom and Dad. I must say this blog is absolutely wonderful.
Love,
Darell and Kathy
