As rough as the last couple of days have been, we've gotten the news that Garrett seems to be feeling better. One doctor even said that he believed Garrett was on the down side of the infection!
Garrett's blood gases have been good lately, so they keep going down a little on his ventilator pressure. We have heard that he cannot go much lower on the vent that he is on now, so if things continue to progress, they will change him back to the conventional ventilator. Garrett still seems to be going up and down on the percent of oxygen they are giving him, but he was down to 21% when we left the NICU last night! With the amount of antibiotics, steroids, and fluids he has been receiving...Garrett has become a little puffy. They have given him some medicine to try and help relieve him of some of the extra fluids and last nights report was that he had a couple of good, wet diapers.
Future battles: When Garrett becomes a little less puffy, they want to put him back on the conventional ventilator. We have been warned that it will take him a while to become stable since he will have to get used to the way it works again. The doctors would also like to insert another PICC line. Yes...they have a greater chance of infection, but the rewards of having a PICC outweigh the negative possibilities. Right now, my poor little guy looks like a pin cushion! He has an IV in each arm (which makes moving around quite complicated) and he has an IV in his head. They would also like to begin feeding him! This is a very good thing, but also something he will have to get used to and start slow.
Heath and I are just very glad that Garrett is beginning to feel better!! It is hard anytime you have a sick child and you feel completely helpless. We just continue to pray that these next few bumps in the roller coaster ride will smooth out soon and Garrett will continue to grow!

Carla,
Danielle Bookter Mitchell sent me this link and told me all about baby Garrett. He is so beautiful. We were blessed with a little girl on Jan 20th but the last month or so of the pregnancy we were faced with the preeclamsia issues as well. Bedrest and prayer kept me sane during it all. We will keep you and your family in our prayers. I know how hard this must be for you all but comfort in the Lord is such a saving grace. Thinking of you all,
Staci Jackson Bosson
